At a meeting about the future of the Riley Park play area in Marlow yesterday, Wycombe District Council announced it has been successful in its negotiations with Sainsbury’s who have generously agreed to make a community contribution of £40,000 towards the play area.
The meeting was attended by Riley Park Trustees, Riley Residents’ Action Group and Marlow Town Council who have all been working with Wycombe District Council to find a way forward for the future of the play area so that it can continue to provide recreation and enjoyment for local residents in the Riley Park area of Marlow.
The community contribution of £40,000 from Sainsbury’s is greatly welcomed by all local interested parties and Wycombe District Council. The generous donation will make a big difference to the play area.
The Riley Park Trust is the owner of the land and is responsible for ensuring that the open space, left in trust in 1914, is used for sport and recreation for children and young people and the general public. Wycombe District Council has agreed to renew the lease with Riley Park Trust to ensure that the play area remains open and to allow more time to find a clear way forward.
Leader of Wycombe District Council, Councillor Lesley Clarke said: “Over the past months we have been working closely with Sainsbury’s to secure this extra funding which will really make a difference to the play area. I am delighted to say that our work has paid off and that we have been successful in our negotiations. Sainsbury’s is making a real commitment to both the town and people of Marlow. I’d like to acknowledge that, through this donation and the co-operation and support we’ve had from a wide range of local partners, we’ve shown what can be achieved by working positively together for a common purpose.”
Andrew Sanderson, development executive at Sainsbury’s said: “Making a positive difference in the community is one of our core values and we are delighted to have been able to support the local community in this instance by providing financial support for the play area. We look forward to making a wider contribution to the community when we bring our proposed new foodstore to Marlow next year.”
